Quote from “A Dream Within A Dream” by Edgar Allan Poe

I recently had a ‘dream within a dream’. I do not know how I was lead to this poem by Edgar Allan Poe. He is one of my favorite poets and moreover a great storyteller. However I had never read this poem or at least I do not recall ever having read it. I found it as I was reading an old anthology. My “dream within a dream” was more of a nightmare. I would like to share a few stanzas from the poem. For me it was an eye opener. I hope you enjoy it. Please leave a comment.

Yet if Hope has flown away

In a night or in a day,

In a vision, or in none,

Is it therefore the less gone?

All that we see or seem

is but a dream within a dream.

And I hold within my hand

grains of the golden sand –

How few! yet how they creep

through my fingers

to the deep,

while I weep,

while I weep!

O God! can I not grasp

them with a tighter clasp?

O God! can I not save

One from the pitiless wave?

Is all that we see or seem

but a dream within a dream?
