“Only vegetables are happy”
William Faulkner wrote “People need trouble – A little frustration to sharpen the spirit on, toughen it. Artist do… only vegetables are happy.”
I thought about the last sentence in that quote and it served as inspiration for the following silly poem.
Only vegetables are happy.
I wondered, how would they know.
For that matter, how would we know?
How would it show?
Would cucumbers be sweeter somehow?
Is broccoli more pleased
simply by being greener?
Frankly, I don’t really care
if vegetables are happy or not.
l happen to love the lot.
So for the record
I write and am happy most of the time;
especially when my vegetables are roasted in a kabob, or
sprinkled with a little salt and pepper or simply stirred fried.
