Back Again!

It has been a while since my last post. Family illness and life consumed most of my time. I hope to get back into the rhythm of writing poems and painting which are the two things I love the most. I did keep a journal where I jotted my deep thoughts, some short poems, and quips and quotes I come across. Today I want to share a poem I wrote recently.

When Sadness Stares You in the Face

Sadness crept up behind me

as I looked into the mirror

It stared me in the face

I could feel its heartache

as if it were mine.

It told me sorrow never stands alone

It pierces the soul

It wails and deafens

But that fact does not make it proud.

I stared at it for a while

and then I decided to ignore it

I wished away its dysphoria, and the despondence

I challenged the bleakness

and it finally disappeared

Only my reflection remained

and the sun’s evening rays beamed through

I knew then that hope was on its way.

How do I unite my body and soul? – A question to be answered

During these difficult times,

when there is still

a real fear

that many more of us may even perish. (from COVID 19 – 200,000 dead and counting)

My heart knows what it has most cherished;

prayer for one thing,

even when the harsh sting,

of hate and despair,

continues and dares,

us to believe in hope.

Why don’t we realize the oneness

of our existence?

Why all the resistance

to love each other

as brothers and sisters?

As my heart beats and keeps

track of time;

we still do not know what remains.

I still sing a simple refrain

Halleluyah! Halleluyah!

Hoping to hear the answer to

How do I unite my body and soul?

97 Days – A Commitment

My heart sunk

when my grand daughter only five

told me she wanted the “sickness” to stop

She misses being in school;

She misses visiting with her adorable cousins;

And of course she misses her grand parents.

I hope she never asks when it will go away.

I think she knows somehow that it will not disaappear;

or that the “sickness” can be cured with chlorine.

I hope her childhood is not destroyed;

If she happens to see the violence on TV

and troops being deployed.

I pray for all our children.

They are all of our children you know.

They depend on all of us to make the right choices,

Starting with the leaders at the top.

Everyone in this universe must connect.

We are all a part of each other

even those who refuse to acknowledge

that we are all truly brothers

and sisters on this planet.

And for those of us here

in the greatest country of the world

we must make sure

the “sickness” is destroyed.

How?

Love yourself and thy neighbor.

Got On line

Got on line

masked and subdued,

nothing much else to do.

My shopping list as long as the line

not everyone looked fine.

Glazed suspicious looks and stares

as if no one were there to comfort or to care.

Finally a signal

to walk right in.

I hope this time I’ll find everything.

Blue masking tape marks the spot

where the sixth feet distancing

between, begins and stops.

Cashier stands behind a shield of Plexiglass

Wearing white plastic gloves and

a light blue cloth mask.

No one speaks to one another;

voices muffled so why bother anyway.

So hard to understand what people say.

Cannot tell if anyone smiles.

Everyone tries not to touch someone

as they walk down the aisles.

Empty shelves

symbolize.

Does anyone truly realize

what is at stake here?

I do not think anyone knows for sure.

All we know is we must endure.

Hold on to what is so dear you hear;

even at a distance,

everyone still feels the fear.

Will today be the day

that someone here

becomes

another number calculated

on those dreaded deadly graphs

with slopes and curves

that shake and toss around our nerves.

As I walk back to my car,

I cannot hold back the tears.

I want to believe this may all just be a bad dream;

and that with a forceful and fiery scream,

I will awake,

to what was before.

Siege

What siege of our minds is this?

Fear infused with every megabyte of information

transmitted over every device imaginable

because we need to be connected to the surreal of our lives

Barriers block our logic

Our emotions cordoned off from our hearts

with yellow ribbons directing us to

“Do Not Cross”

might as well be bloody red

confirming our reality

“We Cannot Live in Peace”

Cause craziness prevails

Our ability to understand restricted

Check points drain our energy

Lives changed forever

childhood lost.

What siege of our minds is this?

Dificil

why does her heart collide

with her own unhappiness?

the signs say slow down please

you have reached

the intersection

of love and friendship.

But she doesn’t know sincere

or trust

only fear of failure

and rejection

no intention

is good enough

she believes that only stuff

like fancy cars and status

and grandiose titles

is the way

to get someone to stay

close enough to really see her soul.

Do you have someone who is DIFICIL?
