Nature’s Rebellion

landscape 4

                                           Painting by Melba Christie

As a grandmother I seem to be more in tune with the things that will affect the future of my grandchildren. I want them to inherit a clean and healthy environment. I want them to feel what it like to run freely on the leaves of grass and through fields of lilies. I recently saw footage of the enormous damage caused by wildfires in California, Washington and Oregon.

I wrote Nature’s Rebellion after watching video about the devastation caused to wildlife and homes in these areas.

Nature’s Rebellion

Grassy foothills

now an eerie white

my heart broke at the sight

Thick layers of smoke

block out the baby blue sky

a 3000 year old Sequoia

reaches out its towering limbs

as if to ask the heavens

to be saved from the smothering blaze nearby

Wildfires everywhere

totally out of control

wait for El Niño

to drench the earth’s soul

Some say fire

and some say ice

Nature’s Rebellion

Who knows what sacrifice

Whatever we do now

may not suffice

My canvas impatiently waits

for me to paint

the landscapes of my dreams

fields of full of lilies

lavender and sage

Daffodils dance their coming of age

We need to remember

our world is one stage

come one and come all

to witness our survival

before it’s too late

be thoughtful, less careless

Don’t let our planet’s death

Be our fate.

Honoring Our Earth

There is no specific date to
remember our mother earth
we should honor her every day

Mother of all
Gaia, beautiful and endless roots
have doted on us for millenia

with leaves of grass and gigantic evergreens
rushing rivers, glossy great falls,
a canopy of cherry blossoms,
cheerful daisies galore delight

your majestic sights excite
and inspire to create
the greatest songs and poems
for your abundance is pure love
shown in masterpieces

your fields of dreams induced
by the sweet aroma of lavender
promote peace and harmony

Dessert flowers mesmerize the nomad
and even your mirages give hope to lost souls
Frosted mountains salute the sun

Mother Earth, Gaia,
Mahimata,
Madre Tierra,
Green Goddess,

There is no specific date to
remember or honor you.

Origin

I come from silky mud

after a season of rain, rain, rain

one spring.

The universe would not

allow the earth to dry up

my mother could not resist

and picked up a clump

and made a fist

to shape me into the person I am today.

She told me though

that I had picked her.

Life’s Cycles

Life is a cycle.

The Universe teaches us this fact.

Everything is a measure.

an inch, a foot, a meter,

an acre, a knot, a score, a chain

Everything has a shape, an identity

mostly unique,

Each beautiful in its own way,

specific to the eye of its beholder

subject to change

without prior notice,

We all age

some of us with grace

as we gain a little bit of wisdom

along the way.

Life cycles

no matter what we try

no matter what we do

we cannot give up

because we are the only ones who can change

we are the only change

A bite in a crispy apple does not diminish it

It becomes a part of all of us

Leaves change and fall

because the bare tree needs to show off the

complexity of its limbs,

the very ones that become the house,

the love letter,

that pencil that draws the last leaf,

or the orchard of whatever suits your fancy.

Life is a cycle:

360 degrees

of hopes

some unfulfilled dreams perhaps

glorious joys

wonderful views

glimpses of clouds

Enjoy all of it

See yourself in all of it.

All of it is you

it is me

It is us.
