On Writing A Poem – A Poem A Day

                  On Writing a Poem

When I write a poem

The words leap from my heart

At least for the most part

Sometimes they prance into my brain

swaddled in deep emotions.

It may be that they simply trot into my soul

this is when spiritual energy takes its toll

Sometimes they appear to describe

a wrenching feeling,

or crushing sadness.

Many times

the word skip to inspire

and make me giddy

full of hope

and elated.

I hate when they sneak up on me

making me quiver with fear

swirling anxiety around me.

When I write a poem

I try to be free

to feel every moment

to be in the now

to cherish the present.

When I write a poem

I just look at the view

focus on nature

and the beauty of

being alive.

When I write a poem

One thing is affirmed;

Life is poetry and poetry is life.

The Dictionary will not Suffice

I looked up words randomly

in my dictionary the other day

I was looking for precise

and the most perfect ways

to say

and illustrate my emotions

when I heard I would

be a grandma again.

I feel eternity is mine;

new beginnings are always divine.

I cannot stop smiling,

nor imagining

whom this little person will be

in the distant future.

The dictionary will not suffice

to express the way I feel.

Being a grandmother is such a real big deal.

So all I can say is

I have the greatest expectations

and my heart grows fonder

of the new little person

that is about to be.

Thank you Lord

for this blessing

you have given me.

A poet is a little god

Someone once told me

a poet is a little god

inside your heart

who listens

when your heart sings

and knows more things

about you

than you know

about yourself.

A poet is a little god

who helps you to feel deeply

emotions you never felt before.

A poet is a little god

who brings you inspiration

and the perfect combination

of words and rhyme

to a love poem

for the person you adore.

A poet is a little god

who spreads so much love

and makes

what you thought

was impossible – happen

with a little help from the heavens above.

The Life of a Poem

The Life of a Poem

by Melba Christie

Strong tree

A poem is born unexpectedly

from a dormant state

and erupts like a volcano

ready to inject its new batch

of thoughts into unsuspecting minds.

It grows old slowly

to our delight

feeding the hearts of new generations

with feelings and emotions

never felt before.

It only succumbs

when ignorance

and insensitivity

prevails.

Once it collapses

into a deep slumber,

so too dies the poet

and the muse

that brought it to life.
