Six Months Without

In remembrance of the 26 children and adults killed in Sandy Hook Elementary School six months to the day.

Six months have passed

since that dreadful day

when 26 souls

lifted away

to heaven.

For parents, siblings, grand parents

aunts, uncles, friends

and even distant strangers

we are forced to

face the truth about life

It can be so so short

and is so unbelievably precious

six months without their smiling faces

six months with only empty spaces

at dining room tables and classroom desks

six months without their chuckles and laughter

without their curious questions

that made us think about

what life is all about

Six months without their special hugs

and kisses that would brighten up our days

and now all there is is anguish and the deepest kind of pain

that is here to stay.

Six months without

our babies barely 6 years of age

six months without watching

them grow inch by inch

We pray the deep hurt will disappear

when angels whisper in our ears

we are here to tell you all

we will not fall again.

This is so beautiful!!! It is 5 months since Vic died and I sometimes think people don’t even remember her anymore. Certainly they avoid talking to me because my grief makes them uncomfortable. This is a beautiful poem. Thank you for remembering 26 souls!

I know the feeling. Sometimes it seems that you are the only person that feels the loss of a loved one. People do not know what to say or what to do. They do feel uncomfortable because they do not understand that the griever does need to talk.
Shakespeare said in Romeo and Juliet:

“When he shall die take him and cut him out into stars and he shall make the face of heaven so fine that all the world will be in love with night and pay no worship to the garish sun.”

This is a direct quote from Romeo and Juliet but it was also cited by RFK when giving a speech in tribute of his brother JFK.

I believe that this applies to anyone who loves someone unconditionally such as a child or sibling. We feel the loss so deeply but must take comfort that they too adorn the night skies as they were the as the Spanish say “the light of our eyes”.
